August Weather and Diving
August 2018 - 2017 - 2016 - 2015 - 2014 - 2013 - 2012 - 2011 - 2010 - 2009 - 2008
August 2018 was just as 2017 about as good as it gets in August, and far better than 2016: lots of sun and many calm days. But in contrast to 2016 and 2017 not much rain, it really was quite dry on Phuket.
On the days where we had a moderate or strong wind it did affect the diving more than in previous years though, just as in July. All in all we had 25 days with lots of sun, 9 days with some rain and no really wet days. On 18 days we had very calm weather with just a slight breeze, on 13 days the wind was stronger.
In 2014 on two days we could not dive in the Shark Point area, in 2013 on one day we could only dive at our alternate destination of Coral Island and on another day we could not go to Racha Noi Island. In 2015 on two days we were limited to Coral Island, on four days to Racha Yai and on four days we were not able to dive in the Shark Point area, all in all ten days where we were limited in dive destinations. 2016 was the first year in which thankfully Coral Island was not used as an alternate destination, so on 9 days we were limited to Racha Yai, on 2 days to Racha Noi and Racha Yai and on 4 days we could not safely dive in the Shark Point area, the worst year in living history. Last year on 2 days we were limited to Racha Yai, on one day we could only dive Racha Noi and Racha yai and on 2 days we could not dive in the King Cruiser/Shark Point area, but this year on 2 days there was no diving at all, on 6 days we were limited to Racha Yai, and on 3 more days we could not comfortably and safely dive in the King Cruiser-Shark Point area.
There were many sightings of blacktip reefsharks at Koh Bida Nok, one of the Phi Phi divesites, but we did not see any leopard sharks. We used to see them at quite a few divesites, but right now we're lucky if we get to see one. But with the national park rules at Phi Phi now enforced, so no beginner divers, no discover scuba divers at the sites we dive at, things are really looking on the up, the diving has been really good these last few months. And not just at Phi Phi, also at the Racha Islands and King Cruiser-Shark Point area, where we did some diving vwith really good visibility.
